# How to Activate Windows 11 (and Fix Activation Errors)

## The Problem
**Settings** shows **Windows is not activated**, or a watermark appears on the desktop. After a motherboard swap, clean install, or sketchy "cheap key" from an auction site, activation fails with codes like **0x803fa067** or **0xC004C003**. Use Microsoft's built-in tools and keys tied to your Microsoft account—third-party "activators" are malware, not a bargain.

## Check Activation Status
**Settings** → **System** → **Activation**  
Note edition (**Home** / **Pro**) and message: **Unable to activate**, **Product key blocked**, or **Connect to the internet**.

## The Fix: Step-by-Step

### Step 1: Sign In With the Right Microsoft Account
Digital licenses link to the Microsoft account used at first activation.
1. **Settings** → **Accounts** → sign in with the account that originally activated this PC (if any).
2. **Activation** → **Troubleshoot** → follow prompts if you changed hardware recently.

### Step 2: Use Activation Troubleshooter (After Hardware Change)
**Settings** → **System** → **Activation** → **Troubleshoot** (must be signed in as administrator).  
Choose **I changed hardware on this device recently** → sign in → pick this PC from the list → **Activate**.

### Step 3: Enter a Valid Product Key
If you have a retail key from Microsoft or a sealed OEM card:
1. **Activation** → **Change product key** → enter the 25-character key (`XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX`).
2. **Edition must match**—a Pro key will not activate Home; install the matching edition or upgrade through the Store.

### Step 4: Upgrade Home to Pro (Paid, Legitimate)
**Settings** → **System** → **Activation** → **Upgrade your edition of Windows** → **Open Store** → purchase **Windows 11 Pro** upgrade. Key resellers cannot sell $10 Pro keys legally; blocked keys are common.

### Step 5: Activate by Phone (Volume License / Error Loops)
1. `Win + R` → `slui 4` → choose your country → call the automated line or use the phone activation menu shown.
2. Read the **Installation ID**; enter the **Confirmation ID** returned. Used rarely for retail PCs but helps when online activation fails.

### Step 6: Command-Line Check (Support Calls)
**Terminal (Admin)**:

slmgr /xpr

```

| **DNS blocked** | Corporate firewall blocking activation endpoints—try home network or mobile hotspot once |

### Step 8: Reinstall on Same Hardware
On a PC that was activated before: clean install **same edition**, sign in with the same Microsoft account, connect internet—digital license often activates automatically within minutes.

* Do not run KMS cracks, "MAS," or YouTube "activate forever" scripts—they break updates and bundle spyware.
* Do not buy keys from random marketplaces; Microsoft can block them and you lose money.
