The Problem
A normal driver update leaves artifacts, crashes, or Code 43 because old registry entries and driver files conflict with the new package. A clean install removes the previous stack before you install the current driver from the vendor.
GPU missing entirely? Fix detection first with GPU not detected before a clean install.
Symptoms
- Games crash after every GeForce or Adrenalin update.
- Two GPU brands listed in Device Manager (old + new).
- Screen works in Safe Mode but fails in normal Windows.
The Fix: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Back Up and Download the New Driver
- Save work and bookmark driver download pages—you may lose signal briefly.
- Download the latest driver only from NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or your laptop OEM (not a random “driver updater”).
- Optional: download DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) from the official Guru3D thread if vendor tools fail—use only from the real source.
Step 2: Disconnect Internet (Optional but Safer)
- Unplug Ethernet or disable Wi-Fi so Windows Update does not install a different driver mid-process.
- You will reconnect after the manual install finishes.
Step 3: Uninstall the Current Driver
- Settings → Apps → uninstall NVIDIA Graphics Driver / AMD Software if listed.
- Device Manager → Display adapters → right-click GPU → Uninstall device → check Attempt to remove the driver → reboot.
- Or boot Safe Mode and run DDU → Clean and restart (follow DDU’s on-screen GPU vendor option).
Step 4: Install the Fresh Driver Package
- NVIDIA: run the installer → choose Custom (Advanced) → check Perform a clean installation.
- AMD: run the installer → Factory Reset or clean install option when offered on Adrenalin installs.
- Intel: use the Intel Driver & Support Assistant or OEM package for laptops with hybrid graphics.
Step 5: Reboot and Verify
- Reconnect internet after install completes.
- Task Manager → Performance → confirm GPU appears with correct name.
- Settings → System → Display → Advanced display → check refresh resolution and HDR if needed.
Step 6: If Problems Return
- Roll back one version in Device Manager → GPU → Properties → Driver → Roll Back if the button is active.
- Laptops: install OEM graphics drivers first—generic desktop drivers sometimes break hybrid switching.
- Pair with update drivers safely and gaming tuning in optimize Windows 11 for gaming once stable.
