# How to Fix Bad Sound Quality on Bluetooth Headphones in Windows 11 URL: https://www.mytechnician.tech/tips/fix-bluetooth-headphones-bad-sound-quality-windows-11/ Published: 2026-09-24 | Author: Ankit Kumar Tags: Windows 11, Audio, Hardware, Fix Summary: Bluetooth headphones sound muffled, tinny, or like a phone call on Windows 11? Switch to stereo mode, stop the hands-free profile, and fix choppy audio. Recommended app: PC-Troubleshooter — https://www.mytechnician.tech/apps/windows-troubleshooter/ (Microsoft Store: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9N7RWKW8SP24?hl=en-us&cid=mytechnician-web). Optional; every step below uses built-in Windows tools. ## The Problem Your Bluetooth headphones sound great on your phone, but on Windows 11 music sounds muffled, flat, or like it is coming through an old telephone. Or the sound was fine until you joined a Teams, Zoom, or Discord call — and it stayed bad afterwards. This is almost always a **Bluetooth profile** problem, not a broken headset. Classic Bluetooth has two modes: * **Stereo (A2DP)** — high-quality audio, **headphones only, no microphone**. * **Hands-free (HFP)** — low-quality mono audio **plus the microphone**. The moment any app opens the headset's microphone, Windows switches to hands-free mode and the quality collapses. Choppy or cutting-out audio is a different problem — interference or power saving — and is covered in Steps 5 and 6. ## Symptoms * Music sounds tinny or muffled, like a phone call. * Quality drops the moment a call starts and does not recover. * Windows lists the same headset twice: **Headphones** and **Headset** (or **Hands-Free**). * Audio cuts out, stutters, or skips when you move away from the PC. ## Quick Checks 1. Close every app that might use a microphone — Teams, Zoom, Discord, Skype, and game voice chat — and check whether the quality comes back. 2. Turn the headset off and on again, then reconnect it from **Settings** → **Bluetooth & devices**. 3. Keep the headset within a few metres of the PC with nothing solid in between. ## The Fix: Step-by-Step ### Step 1: Choose the Stereo Output 1. Click the **speaker** icon on the taskbar → click the arrow next to the volume slider. 2. If your headset appears twice, choose the entry called **Headphones** (or **Stereo**) — not **Headset** or **Hands-Free**. 3. For a permanent default, press `Win + R` → `mmsys.cpl` → **Playback**. Right-click **Headphones** → **Set as Default Device**. Right-click the **Headset / Hands-Free** entry → **Set as Default Communication Device** only if you want to use its microphone. ### Step 2: Use a Different Microphone for Calls While the headset microphone is in use, you cannot have stereo quality at the same time on most Bluetooth headsets. The simple fix is to use a different microphone: 1. **Settings** → **System** → **Sound** → **Input** → select your laptop's built-in microphone, a webcam microphone, or a USB microphone. 2. In Teams, Zoom, or Discord, open audio settings and set **Microphone** to that same device, and **Speaker** to your headset's **Headphones** entry. Now calls use the other microphone, and the headset stays in stereo mode. See [fix microphone not working](https://www.mytechnician.tech/tips/fix-microphone-not-working-windows-11/) if the other microphone is not detected. ### Step 3: Turn Off the Hands-Free Service If you never use the headset microphone, stop Windows from switching to hands-free at all. 1. Press `Win + R`, type `control printers`, and press Enter. (If that opens Settings instead, run `explorer shell:::{A8A91A66-3A7D-4424-8D24-04E180695C7A}`.) 2. Right-click your headphones → **Properties** → **Services** tab. 3. Untick **Handsfree Telephony** → **OK**. 4. Disconnect and reconnect the headset. The headset microphone will no longer work on this PC. Tick the box again to undo it. ### Step 4: Check for LE Audio Support Newer headsets and PCs support **Bluetooth LE Audio**, which carries stereo audio and the microphone together without the quality drop. 1. Update Windows 11 to the latest version (**Settings** → **Windows Update**). 2. Install the latest Bluetooth driver from your laptop or motherboard manufacturer — LE Audio needs a recent driver and a supported chip. 3. If both the headset and PC support it, **Settings** → **Bluetooth & devices** → **Devices** shows an option to **Use LE Audio when available**. Turn it on. ### Step 5: Fix Choppy or Cutting-Out Audio Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi share the same radio band. 1. If your router supports it, connect the PC to **5 GHz** Wi-Fi instead of 2.4 GHz. 2. On a desktop using a USB Bluetooth adapter, move it to a front port or a USB extension cable. **USB 3.0 ports** (blue) create interference in the 2.4 GHz band — use a USB 2.0 port. 3. Disconnect other Bluetooth devices you are not using. Several active devices share the same bandwidth. ### Step 6: Stop Power Saving on the Bluetooth Adapter 1. Right-click **Start** → **Device Manager** → expand **Bluetooth**. 2. Double-click your adapter (Intel, Realtek, Qualcomm, or MediaTek) → **Power Management** tab. 3. Untick **Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power** → **OK**. ### Step 7: Turn Off Audio Enhancements Enhancements can add echo or distortion on Bluetooth devices. 1. **Settings** → **System** → **Sound** → select your headphones. 2. Set **Audio enhancements** to **Off**. 3. Turn **Spatial sound** off to test, then back on if you prefer it. ## What Not to Do * **Don't install "Bluetooth driver updater" tools.** Get the driver from your laptop maker, motherboard maker, or the chip vendor (Intel, Realtek, Qualcomm). * **Don't expect LDAC or other high-resolution codecs** on Windows. Windows does not support LDAC, and many companion-app features on your headset only work from a phone. * **Don't keep re-pairing** hoping it will fix the call quality drop. It is how the profile works, not a pairing fault. ## Still Not Working?
