# How to Fix Bluetooth Not Working in Windows 11

## The Problem
The Bluetooth tile vanished, pairing spins forever, or buds connect but stay silent. Desktops without a dongle and laptops that just woke from sleep see this constantly.

## Symptoms
* The Bluetooth quick-settings tile is missing entirely, and **Settings** has no Bluetooth page.
* Pairing reaches **Connecting…** and then **Try connecting again**.
* Devices show as **Paired** but never **Connected**.
* Bluetooth works from a cold boot and dies after every sleep cycle.

## Step 1: Decide Which Problem You Have
The fixes split cleanly, so identify the case first.

* **No Bluetooth UI at all** → Windows cannot see the adapter. Go to Step 4 and Step 7.
* **Bluetooth is there but nothing pairs** → Steps 2, 3, and 5.
* **Pairs but no audio** → Step 6.

## Step 2: Toggle, Airplane Mode, and a Real Reboot
1. **Settings** → **Bluetooth & devices** → turn **Bluetooth** off, wait ten seconds, on again.
2. Turn **Airplane mode** on for ten seconds, then off. This forces a full radio reset on both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
3. Choose **Restart** rather than **Shut down**. With Fast Startup enabled, a shutdown restores a saved kernel image—including the stuck Bluetooth state—while a restart does not.

## Step 3: Restart the Bluetooth Services
1. Press `Win + R`, type `services.msc`, press Enter.
2. Find **Bluetooth Support Service** → right-click → **Restart**.
3. Double-click it, set **Startup type** to **Automatic**, click **OK**.
4. Do the same for **Bluetooth Audio Gateway Service** and **Bluetooth User Support Service** if they are listed.

## Step 4: Repair the Driver in Device Manager
1. Press `Win + X` → **Device Manager**.
2. Expand **Bluetooth**. If there is no Bluetooth section, click **View** → **Show hidden devices** and look under **Other devices** for an unknown device with a yellow triangle.
3. Right-click your adapter (Intel Wireless Bluetooth, Realtek Bluetooth, Qualcomm QCA) → **Update driver**.
4. If that does nothing, **Uninstall device**, tick **Attempt to remove the driver** if offered, then restart.
5. When Windows does not restore it, install the Bluetooth package from your **laptop or motherboard maker's** support page—not from a driver-updater tool. On Intel-based machines the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth drivers ship together and both should be installed.

## Step 5: Remove the Device and Pair It Again
Stale pairing keys are a frequent cause of a device that will connect to a phone but not to the PC.

1. **Settings** → **Bluetooth & devices** → **Devices**.
2. Click ⋯ next to the device → **Remove device**.
3. Also remove the pairing on the device itself if it supports that—most headphones have a reset combination such as holding both buttons for ten seconds.
4. Put the device into pairing mode (LED flashing, not solid).
5. **Add device** → **Bluetooth**, and select it within the pairing window.

Keep the device within a metre of the PC while pairing, and away from a USB 3.0 hub or drive—USB 3 ports emit interference right in the 2.4 GHz band.

## Step 6: Paired but Silent
Bluetooth audio devices expose two profiles, and Windows sometimes picks the wrong one.

1. **Settings** → **System** → **Sound** → choose the headphones under **Output**.
2. Press `Win + R` → `mmsys.cpl` → **Playback** tab. You may see both **Headphones (Stereo)** and **Headset (Hands-free)**. Set the stereo entry as default for music; the hands-free entry is call-quality and used when the mic is active.
3. If neither appears, remove and re-pair the device.

## Step 7: Stop Sleep From Killing the Radio
1. **Device Manager** → **Bluetooth** → right-click the adapter → **Properties**.
2. **Power Management** tab → untick **Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power**.
3. Do the same on any **USB Root Hub** entries if you use a Bluetooth dongle.

## Step 8: Desktop Dongles
* Plug the dongle into a **rear motherboard port**, not a front panel or a shared hub.
* Keep it away from USB 3.0 devices and metal cases; a short USB extension cable that moves the dongle onto the desk noticeably improves range.
* If Windows' generic driver is flaky, install the dongle maker's own package.
* If the motherboard has built-in Bluetooth **and** you add a dongle, disable one of them—two adapters fight over the same devices.

## What Not to Do
* **Don't pair while the device is connected to your phone.** Most single-point headsets will not accept a second host; disconnect from the phone first.
* **Don't run a driver-updater app.** For wireless hardware it frequently installs a mismatched Intel or Realtek package that makes things worse.
* **Don't ignore the BIOS.** On prebuilt desktops the onboard wireless module can be disabled there.

## No Bluetooth in Device Manager at All?

On laptops, confirm the wireless card is seated; a knocked antenna or card after a repair produces exactly this. If the module is genuinely dead, a USB Bluetooth 5.x dongle costs very little and works immediately on desktops and laptops alike.
