# How to Fix Game Controller Not Working in Windows 11

## The Problem
Steam shows no controller, the Xbox button blinks forever, or the pad works on the desktop but not in-game. Windows 11 supports Xbox and most PlayStation controllers natively, but USB power saving, missing drivers, and launcher input layers regularly get in the way.

## Step 1: Find Out Where It Stops
Press `Win + R`, type `joy.cpl`, press Enter. Select the controller → **Properties**, then press buttons and move the sticks.

* **Nothing registers here** → Windows does not see the controller at all. Steps 2 to 4.
* **Everything registers here but games ignore it** → the driver and hardware are fine; this is an input-layer or per-game problem. Steps 5 to 7.

That single test removes most of the guesswork, because the two cases share no fixes.

## Step 2: Connection Basics
* **Wired:** use a rear motherboard USB port, not a front-panel header or a hub. Confirm the cable carries data—many charge cables do not, and this produces a controller that lights up but never appears.
* **Bluetooth:** **Settings** → **Bluetooth & devices** → remove the controller → put it in pairing mode (Xbox: hold the pair button until the logo flashes rapidly; DualSense: hold **Create** + **PS**) → **Add device**.
* **Xbox Wireless Adapter:** plug it directly into the PC, away from USB 3.0 devices, which interfere in the 2.4 GHz band.
* **Xbox 360 wireless receiver:** these do not work reliably through USB 3.0 hubs at all.

## Step 3: Update the Controller Firmware
Xbox controllers receive firmware updates that fix connection and pairing faults, and a controller several versions behind can behave exactly like a broken one.

Install the **Xbox Accessories** app from the Microsoft Store, connect the controller **by cable**, and apply any update it offers. Do the same after replacing batteries with a rechargeable pack.

## Step 4: Reinstall the Driver
1. **Device Manager** → look under **Xbox Peripherals**, **Human Interface Devices**, and **Bluetooth**.
2. Right-click the controller → **Update driver** → **Search automatically**.
3. If it carries a yellow warning triangle, **Uninstall device**, then restart and reconnect.
4. Under **Human Interface Devices**, also check for a disabled **HID-compliant game controller** entry and enable it.

## Step 5: Stop Windows Powering the Port Down
Selective suspend drops wired controllers mid-session, which reads as random disconnects.

1. **Control Panel** → **Power Options** → **Change plan settings** → **Change advanced power settings**.
2. **USB settings** → **USB selective suspend setting** → **Disabled** for both battery and plugged in.
3. Then in **Device Manager**, for each **USB Root Hub** and for the controller itself: **Properties** → **Power Management** → untick **Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power**.

## Step 6: Sort Out Steam Input
Steam's input layer helps some games and breaks others, and it is the most common reason a controller works on the desktop but not in one specific title.

1. **Steam** → **Settings** → **Controller**.
2. Enable the support matching your pad: **Xbox**, **PlayStation**, or **Generic**.
3. For a specific game: right-click it in the library → **Properties** → **Controller** → try **Enable Steam Input** and **Disable Steam Input**, testing both.

Rule of thumb: a game with native controller support usually works better with Steam Input **off**; a game with no controller support needs it **on** so Steam can emulate a pad.

## Step 7: When Two Input Layers Fight
Symptoms: the cursor moves on its own, menu selections skip two items, or the game sees two controllers.

* Close DS4Windows or DualSenseX while playing Steam games—Steam handles PlayStation pads natively now, and running both creates a duplicate device.
* Close Xbox Game Bar, GeForce Experience, and other overlays as a test.
* Disconnect a second controller or a racing wheel; some games only read controller number one.

## PlayStation Controllers Specifically
DualShock 4 and DualSense work natively in Steam. Outside Steam, many games expect an Xbox-layout controller and need translation:

1. Download **DS4Windows** or **DualSenseX** **from the official GitHub releases page only**—counterfeit downloads for these tools are common.
2. Run it, connect the pad, and leave it in the tray while playing.
3. Disable Steam's PlayStation Configuration Support while DS4Windows is running, or the two will conflict.

## Step 8: Test Outside the Game
1. Re-check `joy.cpl`.
2. Try a controller test website in a browser.
3. Open **Xbox Accessories** and confirm all buttons register.

If input works everywhere except one game, the game's own settings or its anti-cheat is responsible. Check the in-game **Controls** menu for a controller toggle, and look at the game's support forum—some anti-cheat systems block controller-remapping software outright.

## Still Not Working?
* **Works in Steam but not the Epic or Xbox app** → each launcher has its own input layer; enable controller support in that launcher's settings.
