# How to Fix a Microphone Not Working in Windows 11

## The Problem
Callers cannot hear you, or the input meter in **Sound** settings never moves when you talk. Speakers work fine—this is an **input** problem, not [no audio / no sound output](https://www.mytechnician.tech/tips/fix-no-audio-windows-11/).

## Symptoms
* The **Test your microphone** bar in Settings stays flat while you speak.
* You are audible in one app but silent in another.
* Your voice is picked up but is quiet, distant, or clipping badly.
* A headset mic works on a phone but not on the PC.

## Step 1: Confirm Where the Failure Is
Go to **Settings** → **System** → **Sound** → **Input**, select your microphone, and speak.

* **The bar moves, but callers still cannot hear you** → Windows is fine. The fault is inside the app: go to Step 5.
* **The bar never moves** → Windows is not receiving audio. Work through Steps 2 to 4.

This one check saves most of the guesswork, because the two cases have almost nothing in common.

## Step 2: Mute Switches, Ports, and Cables
Hardware causes more silent mics than software does.

* Check the **inline mute button** on a headset cable and the mute switch on the earcup. Many headsets show a red LED when muted.
* On a laptop, look for a mic-mute function key (usually `F4`), which has its own LED.
* Split-plug headsets need the **pink** jack for the mic; a single 4-pole TRRS plug needs a combo port or a splitter adapter. Plugged into a green jack, the mic is electrically not connected at all.
* Move a USB mic or headset to a **rear** port on a desktop. Front-panel headers are frequently unplugged inside the case or wired to the wrong header.

## Step 3: Set the Right Default Input Device
1. **Settings** → **System** → **Sound** → **Input**.
2. Choose your actual microphone, not **Stereo Mix**, not a virtual device installed by NVIDIA Broadcast or a meeting app.
3. Click it, set **Input volume** to roughly 80–100%.
4. Use **Test your microphone** and speak at normal volume; you want the bar peaking around three-quarters, not pinned at the top.

## Step 4: Grant Microphone Permissions
1. **Settings** → **Privacy & security** → **Microphone**.
2. Turn on **Microphone access** (device-wide), **Let apps access your microphone**, and—critically—**Let desktop apps access your microphone**.
3. Scroll the app list and enable Teams, Zoom, Discord, and your browser individually.

Desktop apps sit under the last toggle, which is separate from the per-app list and is the single most common cause of a mic that works in Settings but nowhere else.

## Step 5: The Classic Sound Panel
Some controls never made it into the new Settings app.

1. Press `Win + R`, type `mmsys.cpl`, press Enter.
2. Open the **Recording** tab. If your mic is not listed, right-click in the empty space and tick **Show Disabled Devices**, then enable it.
3. Double-click the mic → **Levels**: set the microphone slider high, and add **Microphone Boost** in +10 dB steps only if you are still too quiet.
4. **Advanced** tab: untick **Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device** while troubleshooting.
5. **Enhancements** tab (if present): tick **Disable all enhancements**. Noise suppression from a vendor driver can gate a quiet mic into total silence.

## Step 6: Drivers
1. **Device Manager** → **Audio inputs and outputs** → right-click the mic → **Update driver**.
2. If that changes nothing, **Uninstall device** and restart so Windows re-enumerates it.
3. For Realtek or a laptop's own audio stack, install the vendor's package from the PC maker's site rather than a generic one.
4. Bluetooth headsets: remove the device and pair it again—see [Bluetooth not working](https://www.mytechnician.tech/tips/fix-bluetooth-not-working-windows-11/). Note that a Bluetooth headset in hands-free/mic mode drops to call-quality audio; that is normal, not a fault.

## Step 7: Fix It Inside the App
Every conferencing app keeps its own device selection, independent of Windows.

* **Teams:** ⋯ → Settings → Devices → Microphone.
* **Zoom:** Settings → Audio → Microphone, and untick **Automatically adjust microphone volume** while testing.
* **Discord:** User Settings → Voice & Video. Turn off **Automatic Input Sensitivity** and drag the threshold manually until the bar turns green as you talk.
* **Chrome/Edge:** click the padlock in the address bar → Site settings → Microphone → Allow.

## Step 8: Run the Troubleshooter
**Settings** → **System** → **Troubleshoot** → **Other troubleshooters** → **Recording Audio**. It resets the audio endpoint builder service and can clear a stuck exclusive-mode lock.

## What Not to Do
* **Don't set Microphone Boost to maximum.** Above roughly +20 dB you amplify the preamp's own hiss more than your voice.
* **Don't leave Stereo Mix selected.** It captures what the PC is playing, so callers hear themselves echoed back and never hear you.
* **Don't install a driver-updater utility.** Audio drivers come from the PC or motherboard vendor.

## Still Silent?
Try the headset on a phone. If it fails there too, the mic or cable is dead.
