How to Fix Microsoft Teams Not Working on Windows 11
The Problem
Teams stuck on Loading, you cannot hear anyone, or your camera is black while Zoom works. The new Microsoft Teams (work/school or personal) stores cache like a browser—sign-in tokens and device permissions break after sleep, updates, or headset changes.
Mic works nowhere? Fix microphone not working. Camera dead in all apps? Fix webcam not working. Wrong speakers? Fix headphones / wrong audio output.
Symptoms
- Endless spinner at sign-in.
- We couldn't connect / CA policy errors (work accounts).
- Others hear you; you hear nothing (or reverse).
The Fix: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Fully Quit Teams
Right-click Teams tray icon → Quit. Task Manager → end ms-teams, Teams, WebView2 leftovers.
Step 2: Clear Teams Cache (Safe)
Close Teams, then delete:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams (classic)
%localappdata%\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache (new Teams—path may vary slightly by version)
Reopen Teams and sign in—first launch re-downloads cache.
Step 3: Repair or Reset Teams App
Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Microsoft Teams → Advanced options → Repair → Reset if needed.
Step 4: Pick the Right Audio Devices In-Meeting
Teams → ⋯ → Settings → Devices:
- Speaker and Microphone → match your headset (not Intel Smart Sound phantom devices).
- Make a test call to verify both directions.
Windows: Settings → System → Sound → set defaults before joining.
Step 5: Allow Camera and Microphone Permissions
Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone / Camera → On globally → scroll to Microsoft Teams → allow. Laptop function keys: enable camera/mic (F8/F10 varies).
Step 6: Update Teams and WebView2
Teams → Settings → About → Check for updates. Install Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime from Microsoft if Teams is a blank window.
Step 7: Work/School Account Issues
- Sign out → sign in with work URL your IT provided.
- Conditional Access may block personal PCs—error codes in a browser sign-in need IT, not registry hacks.
- Try Edge or Chrome for teams.microsoft.com web client as a temporary workaround.
Step 8: Network and VPN
Teams uses UDP for media. Strict VPNs kill audio—disconnect VPN for a test call. Fix DNS if sign-in alone fails.
Classic vs New Teams
If your org still deploys classic Teams, uninstall only after IT guidance. Personal PCs: install Microsoft Teams from Microsoft.com/Store once—running both versions causes device conflicts.
General app crashes: Fix app crashing or won't open when Teams.exe faults with a specific DLL in Event Viewer.
