Optional; every step below uses built-in Windows tools. ## The Problem Mouse lag comes from one of four places: the **link** between mouse and PC (wireless interference, a failing cable, a weak USB port), **power management** switching the device off mid-use, a **driver or software** conflict, or the **system** being too busy to draw the pointer. Wireless lag and wired stuttering usually have different causes, so the first useful thing you can do is establish which one you have. > **Pointer not moving at all?** Check the device is recognised first — [fix USB ports not working](https://www.mytechnician.tech/tips/fix-usb-ports-not-working-windows-11/). **Laptop trackpad rather than a mouse?** See [fix a touchpad not working](https://www.mytechnician.tech/tips/fix-windows-11-touchpad-not-working-laptop/). ## Symptoms * The pointer jumps in steps rather than moving smoothly. * It freezes for half a second, then catches up in a rush. * Movement is fine on the desktop but stutters in games. * A wireless mouse works close to the receiver and stutters further away. * Clicks register late, or a single click registers twice. ## Step 1: Split Wireless from Wired Sixty seconds of testing narrows the field enormously. 1. **Wireless mouse:** plug the USB receiver into a **front or side port**, or use a short USB extension so it sits on the desk rather than behind the PC. Metal cases and USB 3.0 ports both interfere with 2.4 GHz receivers. 2. Fit **fresh batteries**, or charge a rechargeable mouse fully. A weak cell causes exactly this stutter long before the mouse stops working. 3. **Bluetooth mouse:** remove it and re-pair — **Settings** → **Bluetooth & devices** → the mouse → **⋯** → **Remove device**, then pair again. Test the same mouse on another PC if you can. Lag there too means the mouse; lag only here means the PC. ## Step 2: Stop Windows Turning the Device Off Power management on USB controllers is one of the most common causes of intermittent mouse lag. 1. Right-click **Start** → **Device Manager**. 2. Expand **Universal Serial Bus controllers**. For **each USB Root Hub** and each **Generic USB Hub**, right-click → **Properties** → **Power Management** tab → untick **Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power** → **OK**. 3. Do the same under **Mice and other pointing devices** for your mouse, and under **Human Interface Devices** for any **HID-compliant mouse** entry that has a Power Management tab. 4. Then open **Control Panel** → **Power Options** → **Change plan settings** → **Change advanced power settings** → **USB settings** → **USB selective suspend setting** → **Disabled**. 5. Reboot. ## Step 3: Turn Off Pointer Enhancement and Check the Speed "Enhance pointer precision" applies acceleration, which reads as inconsistent tracking rather than lag. 1. Open **Settings** → **Bluetooth & devices** → **Mouse** → **Additional mouse settings**. 2. On the **Pointer Options** tab, untick **Enhance pointer precision**. 3. Set the pointer speed slider to the middle notch (the 6th of 11) — that is 1:1 with no scaling. 4. Set the DPI in the mouse's own software instead, if it has any. Very high DPI on a low polling rate produces visible stepping. 5. Click **Apply**. ## Step 4: Reinstall the Mouse Drivers 1. In **Device Manager**, expand **Mice and other pointing devices**. 2. Right-click your mouse → **Uninstall device**. Do not tick "remove the driver" for the mouse itself. 3. Do the same for every **HID-compliant mouse** entry under **Human Interface Devices**. 4. Restart. Windows reinstalls the standard drivers automatically. 5. If you use vendor software (Logitech G HUB, Razer Synapse, Corsair iCUE), update it — or uninstall it entirely as a test. In the mouse's software, set the **polling rate** to **1000 Hz** for a wired or high-end wireless mouse. On a cheap wireless mouse, **500 Hz** is often steadier. 2. Clean the optical sensor window with a dry cotton bud, and clear dust from the feet. 3. Optical sensors struggle on **glass, gloss, and dark uniform surfaces**. Put a proper mousepad under it — this fixes more "lag" reports than any software step. 4. Also remove any wireless charging pad, phone, or Wi-Fi router sitting within about 30 cm of the receiver. ## Step 6: Rule Out System Load and Interrupt Latency If the whole desktop feels sticky, the mouse is a symptom rather than the fault. 1. Open **Task Manager** (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) → **Performance**. Watch CPU, memory, and disk while the stutter happens. 2. Run **LatencyMon** for a few minutes. If it names a specific driver as causing high DPC latency, that driver is the target — network and audio drivers are common. 4. Turn on **Settings** → **System** → **Display** → **Graphics** → **Default graphics settings** → **Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling**, and test with it both on and off. In-game, use **Fullscreen (exclusive)** rather than borderless where the option exists, and cap the frame rate a few frames below your refresh rate. 3. On a wired mouse, flex the cable gently near the plug and near the mouse body while moving the pointer. If it cuts out, the cable is broken — replace the mouse. 2. Test the mouse on a second PC and test a second mouse on this one. That single comparison tells you whether to replace hardware or keep troubleshooting Windows.
