# How to Fix Snipping Tool Not Working in Windows 11

## The Problem
`Win + Shift + S` does nothing, the Snipping Tool opens but capture fails, or screenshots save as a black rectangle. Windows 11 merged the classic Snipping Tool with Snip & Sketch, and the usual causes are broken app data, a reassigned Print Screen key, or a GPU capture conflict.

## Symptoms
* The dimming overlay never appears after `Win + Shift + S`.
* Snipping Tool opens and closes instantly.
* Capture works on the desktop but produces black in games or video players.
* The snip is taken but nothing arrives in the clipboard.

## Step 1: Narrow It Down
* **Open Snipping Tool from Start and click New.** If that works, the app is fine and the problem is the keyboard shortcut—go to Step 2.
* **App works, capture is black.** That is a graphics or protected-content issue—Step 6.
* **App will not open at all.** Steps 3 and 7.

## Step 2: Check the Shortcuts and the Print Screen Key
The three built-in captures:

| Shortcut | Result |
|---|---|
| `Win + Shift + S` | Region capture to clipboard |
| `Win + PrtScn` | Full screen saved to `Pictures\Screenshots` |
| `Alt + PrtScn` | Active window to clipboard |

To make PrtScn open the capture bar: **Settings** → **Accessibility** → **Keyboard** → turn on **Use the Print screen key to open screen capture**.

If PrtScn does nothing anywhere, check that another application has not claimed it—OneDrive, Dropbox, ShareX, Greenshot, and GeForce Experience all offer to take over the key, and two of them fighting produces exactly this.

## Step 3: Repair, Then Reset the App
1. **Settings** → **Apps** → **Installed apps**.
2. Search **Snipping Tool** → ⋯ → **Advanced options**.
3. Click **Repair** first—it preserves settings. Test.
4. Still broken? Click **Reset**. This clears app data but not your saved screenshots.
5. Also click **Terminate** at the top of that page before retrying.

## Step 4: End Stuck Capture Processes
A crashed overlay leaves a process holding the capture surface, so nothing new can start.

1. `Ctrl + Shift + Esc` → **Details** tab.
2. End **SnippingTool.exe**, **ScreenClippingHost.exe**, and **ScreenSketch** if present.
3. Relaunch from Start.

## Step 5: Check Screenshot Permissions
1. **Settings** → **Privacy & security** → **Screenshots and apps** (called **Screenshot borders** on some builds).
2. Ensure **Let apps take screenshots** is on.
3. Also check **Settings** → **Privacy & security** → **App permissions** → **Screenshots** for a per-app entry.

## Step 6: Black Screenshots
Black captures almost always mean hardware-accelerated or protected content.

* **In games:** exclusive fullscreen blocks the Windows overlay. Switch the game to **borderless windowed** mode, or use the game's own screenshot key or Steam's `F12`.
* **In browsers playing video:** DRM-protected content (Netflix, Prime Video) renders black by design. That is a copyright protection, not a fault.
* **Everywhere:** disable hardware acceleration in the affected app, or update the GPU driver — see [how to update outdated drivers](https://www.mytechnician.tech/tips/how-to-update-outdated-drivers/).
* **HDR displays:** captures of HDR content look washed out or black in SDR viewers. Turn HDR off temporarily to test: **Settings** → **System** → **Display** → **Use HDR**.

## Step 7: Re-register the App
In **Terminal (Admin)**:

Get-AppxPackage *ScreenSketch* | Reset-AppxPackage
```

If that fails, re-register it fully:

Get-AppxPackage *ScreenSketch* -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
```

Restart afterwards. As a last option, uninstall Snipping Tool from **Installed apps** and reinstall it from the Microsoft Store.

## Step 8: Check the Screenshots Folder
`Win + PrtScn` saves to `Pictures\Screenshots`. If that folder was deleted, moved, or redirected to a OneDrive location that is not syncing, the capture appears to do nothing.

1. Open `%userprofile%\Pictures` and confirm a **Screenshots** folder exists.
2. Right-click it → **Properties** → **Location** to see where it actually points.
3. Recreate the folder if it is missing.

## Multi-Monitor and Multi-GPU
If capture works on one screen but not another, unplug the secondary display and test. Laptops with hybrid graphics sometimes route the wrong framebuffer to the capture API—forcing the Snipping Tool onto the integrated GPU in **Settings** → **System** → **Display** → **Graphics** resolves it.

## Alternatives While You Fix It
* `Alt + PrtScn` then paste into Paint.
* **Xbox Game Bar** — `Win + G` → capture widget, which uses a different capture path entirely and often works when Snipping Tool does not.
* PowerShell one-liner or a third-party tool such as ShareX if you need this working immediately.
