# How to Fix Windows Firewall Blocking Apps in Windows 11

## The Problem
A program shows **Windows Defender Firewall has blocked some features**, multiplayer games can't find lobbies, or another PC on your network can't see shared folders. Windows 11 blocks inbound connections by default on **Public** networks—wrong network profile or missing allow rules are the usual fix, not disabling the firewall entirely.

## Symptoms
* Pop-up: **Windows Defender Firewall has blocked some features of this app**.
* Game launches but **multiplayer** or **server browser** is empty.
* **Network discovery** off—other PCs don't appear in File Explorer.

## The Fix: Step-by-Step

### Step 1: Allow the App When Windows Prompts
1. When the firewall dialog appears, click **Allow access**.
2. Check both **Private** and **Public** if you need the app on home and travel networks—or **Private** only for home file sharing (safer).
3. If you clicked **Cancel** earlier, remove the block in Step 2.

### Step 2: Add the App Through Settings
1. **Settings** → **Privacy & security** → **Windows Security** → **Firewall & network protection**.
2. Click **Allow an app through firewall**.
3. Click **Change settings** → **Allow another app** → **Browse** → select the `.exe` (e.g. `steam.exe`, `javaw.exe`).
4. Check **Private** (and **Public** only if needed) → **OK**.

### Step 3: Set the Network to Private (Home Networks)
Public profile blocks most inbound sharing.
1. **Settings** → **Network & internet** → **Wi-Fi** or **Ethernet** → click your connected network.
2. Set **Network profile type** to **Private**.

### Step 4: Enable Network Discovery (File Sharing)
1. **Settings** → **Network & internet** → **Advanced network settings** → **Advanced sharing settings** (or search **Advanced sharing settings** in Start).
2. Under **Private** profile: turn on **Network discovery** and **File and printer sharing**.
3. Allow through firewall when prompted.

### Step 5: Create an Inbound Rule (Advanced)
When the app list does not include your program:
1. Press `Win + R`, type `wf.msc`, **Enter** (Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security).
2. **Inbound Rules** → **New Rule** → **Program** → browse to the `.exe` → **Allow the connection**.
3. Apply to **Domain**, **Private**, **Public** as needed → name the rule (e.g. "Allow MyGame").
4. Repeat for the game's anti-cheat or launcher `.exe` if multiplayer still fails.

### Step 6: Reset Firewall to Default (Last Resort Before Disabling)
1. **Settings** → **Privacy & security** → **Windows Security** → **Firewall & network protection**.
2. Click **Restore firewalls to default** (wording varies)—confirm.
3. Re-allow only the apps you trust using Steps 2–5.

### Step 7: Confirm Third-Party Antivirus Is Not Doubling Up
Norton, McAfee, and Avast add their own firewall layers.
1. Open the third-party suite → firewall section → add the same allow rules.
2. Or uninstall the third-party firewall component and rely on Windows Defender Firewall to avoid conflicting rules.

## What Not to Do
* Do not turn off **Windows Defender Firewall** permanently—brief testing only, then re-enable.
* Do not open **all ports** on the router for a game without checking the game's official port list first.

## Still Not Working?
