But "SSD" covers several very different products, and the marketing numbers are the least useful part of the decision. **The most important thing to understand first:** the jump from a hard drive to *any* SSD is enormous. The jump from a SATA SSD to a fast NVMe one is barely perceptible in everyday use. Do not overspend on sequential speed figures you will never notice. ## Step 1: Check What Your PC Supports 1. Find your motherboard or laptop model—press `Win + R`, run `msinfo32`, and read **BaseBoard Product** or **System Model**. Look up the specification and note: * How many **M.2** slots it has, and whether each is **NVMe (PCIe)**, **SATA**, or both. * Which **PCIe generation** the M.2 slots run at—Gen 3, Gen 4, or Gen 5. * Whether spare **2.5-inch bays** and SATA ports are available. 3. On a laptop, check whether the M.2 slot is full length (2280) or a shorter 2242/2260—short slots are common in thin machines and the wrong length simply will not fit. M.2 SATA and M.2 NVMe drives look almost identical and use the same slot shape. A SATA-only M.2 slot will not run an NVMe drive at all. Check the notch keying and the manual before buying. ## Step 2: Form Factor * **2.5-inch SATA** — the size of a small laptop hard drive, connected by a SATA data cable and a power cable. Fits nearly any desktop or older laptop with a drive bay. The right choice for a machine with no M.2 slot. * **M.2** — a bare "gum stick" that plugs directly into the board and needs no cables. Do not pay for the difference unless the slot supports it and your workload needs it. ## Step 4: Capacity * **500 GB** — the practical minimum for Windows plus core applications. * **1 TB** — the value sweet spot for most people, and where price per gigabyte is usually best. * **2 TB or more** — games, video projects, or large media libraries. Buy a size up when the price is close. Drives slow down and wear faster when run near full, and Windows needs roughly 20 GB free just to install a feature update. Aim to keep at least 15% free permanently. ## Step 5: The Specifications That Actually Matter **DRAM cache.** Drives with a DRAM cache hold their speed under sustained writes; DRAM-less drives are cheaper and fall off a cliff during long copies. For a boot drive that gets written to constantly, DRAM is worth paying for. **NAND type.** TLC is the mainstream choice. QLC is cheaper and higher capacity but slower once its cache is exhausted—acceptable for a games or media drive, less so for a system drive. **TBW (terabytes written).** The endurance rating. Any mainstream drive vastly exceeds what a normal user writes in five years, so this only matters for write-heavy work. **Warranty.** Five years from a reputable brand is the standard to expect. This is a better signal of quality than any speed figure. **Heatsink.** Gen 4 and Gen 5 drives run hot and throttle without one. Many motherboards include an M.2 heatsink—check before buying a drive with one attached, since the two can conflict physically. ## Step 6: Avoid the Traps * **Don't buy unbranded drives** from marketplace sellers.
