# How to Convert PDF to Word in Windows 11 (Free and Offline) URL: https://www.mytechnician.tech/tips/how-to-convert-pdf-to-word-windows-11/ Published: 2026-11-08 | Author: Ankit Kumar Tags: Windows 11, PDF, Documents, Files Summary: Turn a PDF into an editable Word document on Windows 11 or 10. Use Word's built-in converter, fix shifted layouts, and handle scanned PDFs with OCR. Recommended app: Quick File Converter, https://www.mytechnician.tech/apps/file-converter/ (Microsoft Store: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9MTH938Z7S55?hl=en-us&cid=mytechnician-web). Optional; every step below uses built-in Windows tools. ## The Problem You have a PDF and need to change it: fix a typo in a form, update a CV, or reuse a few paragraphs. A PDF is built for viewing, so Windows opens it in Edge, where you can read and annotate it but not rewrite it. If you have Microsoft Word, you already have a PDF converter. The result depends on what kind of PDF you start with: * **Text-based PDF** (exported from Word, a website, or an app): converts well. You can select the text in Edge, which is the quick test. * **Scanned PDF** (a photo or a scan of paper): every page is an image. Word cannot read the words in it without OCR, so you get pictures or nothing usable. ## Quick Checks First 1. **Try selecting text.** Open the PDF in Edge and drag across a sentence. If it highlights, the PDF has real text. If the whole page highlights as one block, or nothing happens, it is a scan: go to [Step 4](#step-4). 2. **Password prompt?** A PDF with an open password has to be opened with that password first. Word asks for it during conversion. 3. **Only need a few lines?** Copy them from Edge and paste into Word. That is faster than converting the whole file. ## Step 1: Open the PDF in Word 1. Open **Word** and choose **File** → **Open** → **Browse**. 2. Change the file type filter to **PDF Files** if the PDF does not show, then select it. 3. Word warns that it will convert the PDF into an editable document and that it may not look exactly like the original. Select **OK**. 4. When the document opens, choose **File** → **Save As** and save it as a **Word Document (.docx)**. The original PDF is left untouched. You can also right-click the PDF in File Explorer and choose **Open with** → **Word**. ## Step 2: Fix What Moved Word rebuilds the page from the PDF's text and shapes, so some layouts shift. The usual fixes: * **Text in separate boxes:** multi-column pages and forms often come in as text boxes. Click the edge of a box to move it, or copy the text out into the main body. * **Odd line breaks:** PDFs store each line separately. Select the paragraph, open **Find and Replace** (**Ctrl + H**), and replace manual line breaks (`^l`) with a space. * **Wrong font:** if the PDF used a font you do not have, Word substitutes one. Select all (**Ctrl + A**) and set a single font. * **Tables split across pages:** right-click the table → **Table Properties** → **Row**, and turn off **Allow row to break across pages** if rows tear in half. ## Step 3: Convert Without Word If Word is not installed: * **Word for the web** is free with a Microsoft account. It works in the browser, which means the PDF goes to OneDrive first. * **LibreOffice** is a free desktop suite. Open the PDF with **LibreOffice Draw**, which keeps the layout for small edits but treats every line as a separate box. * **Avoid upload sites for private files.** A free converter website stores a copy of your document on its server. Do not use one for contracts, IDs, payslips, tax forms, or medical letters. ## Step 4: Convert a Scanned PDF with OCR A scan needs optical character recognition (OCR), which reads the shapes of the letters and turns them into text. 1. For one page, the free route is Snipping Tool: see [copy text from an image or scanned PDF](https://www.mytechnician.tech/tips/how-to-extract-text-from-image-scanned-pdf-windows-11/). 2. Scan quality decides OCR accuracy. Rescan at 300 dpi, straight, with good contrast if you can. 3. Always proofread the result. Numbers, names, and anything handwritten are the usual errors. > **Whole scanned documents, or many PDFs at once?** [Quick File Converter](https://www.mytechnician.tech/apps/file-converter/) converts PDF to Word on the PC, with no upload. Pages that already have text use it directly. Scanned pages go through OCR, and you choose between an editable layout and an exact copy of the page with the text behind it. PDFs up to 200 MB are supported. ## Step 5: Turn It Back Into a PDF When the edits are done, choose **File** → **Save As** → **PDF** in Word. The steps and options are in [convert Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to PDF](https://www.mytechnician.tech/tips/how-to-convert-word-excel-powerpoint-to-pdf-windows-11/). ## FAQ ### Can I convert PDF to Word without losing formatting? Simple documents usually convert cleanly. Complex layouts with columns, sidebars, or forms rarely come out identical, because Word has to rebuild the page from separate pieces. Converting with a layout-preserving mode keeps the look, but those pages are harder to edit. ### Why does my converted document show only pictures? The PDF is a scan, so each page is an image with no text inside. Run OCR on it first, as in Step 4. ### Is it safe to use a free online PDF to Word converter? For a menu or a public flyer, usually yes. For anything personal or confidential, convert on your own PC, because the website keeps your file at least for a while and you cannot check what happens to it. ### Does Windows 11 have a built-in PDF to Word converter? Windows itself does not. Microsoft Word does, and so does Word for the web.
