Optional; every step below uses built-in Windows tools. ## The Problem In a match or on a Teams call everything rubber-bands and voices chop, even though speed tests look fine. High **ping** and **packet loss** are about latency and dropped packets between your PC and the server—download speed barely matters. A 1 Gbps line with 8% packet loss is unusable for gaming; a 30 Mbps line with clean routing is not. ## Symptoms * Characters teleporting or rubber-banding in online games. * Robotic or cut-out voices in Discord, Teams, or Zoom. * Web pages that stall for a second then load instantly. * Ping that sits fine and then spikes to several hundred milliseconds periodically. ## Step 1: Measure Before You Change Anything Guessing wastes hours. Two commands tell you where the problem is. Open **Terminal** and run a sustained ping to a nearby server: ```cmd ping -t 1.1.1.1 ``` Let it run for two minutes, then press `Ctrl + C` and read the summary. What you are looking for: * **Loss above 0%** — genuine packet loss. * **Wildly varying times** (20 ms, then 300 ms, then 25 ms) — jitter, which causes the stutter you feel. * **Consistently high but stable** times — a routing or distance issue, not a local fault. Then test your own router—use the gateway address from `ipconfig`: ```cmd ping -t 192.168.1.1 ``` **This is the key test.** Loss or spikes to your own router means the problem is inside your home—Wi-Fi, cable, or adapter. A clean router ping with loss further out means the problem is your ISP or the route beyond it, and nothing on the PC will fix it. For the path itself, run a long trace: ```cmd pathping 1.1.1.1 ``` It takes several minutes and shows loss at each hop. ## Step 2: Use a Cable If you game or take calls on Wi-Fi, this is the single largest improvement available. Wi-Fi shares airtime with neighbours, microwaves, and Bluetooth, and produces exactly the intermittent spikes that ruin latency-sensitive traffic. A Cat5e or Cat6 run to the router eliminates the entire category of problem. End or pause: Steam, Epic, and Xbox downloads; OneDrive and Dropbox sync; cloud backup jobs; and Windows Update. 3. Set Steam to limit downloads during gameplay (Settings → Downloads). 4. Check other devices too—someone streaming 4K or uploading video on the same connection will do this to you regardless of your PC's settings. ## Step 4: Reset the Network Stack Worth doing once when things have been unreliable for a while. In **Terminal (Admin)**: ```cmd ipconfig /flushdns ``` ```cmd netsh winsock reset ``` ```cmd netsh int ip reset ``` Restart afterwards. Note that `netsh winsock reset` clears third-party layered providers, which is usually the point—VPN clients and old security software leave hooks in that stack. ## Step 5: Change Your DNS Server DNS does not affect in-game ping, but it does affect how quickly pages and services start responding, and ISP resolvers are often slow or overloaded. 1. Press `Win + R`, type `ncpa.cpl`, press Enter. 2. Right-click your active adapter → **Properties**. 3. Double-click **Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)**. 4. Choose **Use the following DNS server addresses**: * Cloudflare: `1.1.1.1` and `1.0.0.1` * Google: `8.8.8.8` and `8.8.4.4` * Quad9 (with malware filtering): `9.9.9.9` and `149.112.112.112` 5. This is a common cause of periodic drop-outs. 3. **Advanced** tab → disable **Energy Efficient Ethernet** / **Green Ethernet** if present. It is a well-known source of latency spikes on Realtek adapters. 4. Install the adapter driver from the **motherboard or laptop maker**, not Windows Update's generic one. ## Step 7: Check for Interference and Cable Faults * Replace the Ethernet cable—a damaged or cheap cable causes retransmissions that look exactly like packet loss. Check the adapter is linking at 1 Gbps, not 100 Mbps (`ncpa.cpl` → double-click the adapter → **Speed**). * Try a different port on the router. * Bypass any powerline adapter or unmanaged switch as a test. ## Step 8: When It Is the ISP If the router pings cleanly but hops beyond it lose packets consistently, collect evidence and report it: * A `pathping` output showing loss starting at a specific hop. * Times of day when it is worst. * Whether it happens on multiple devices. Reboot the modem once before calling. The measurable benefit is negligible on modern connections and it can hurt throughput. * **Don't use a VPN to fix ping** unless a trace proves your ISP's routing is genuinely bad.
