# How to Split a PDF or Extract Pages in Windows 11 URL: https://www.mytechnician.tech/tips/how-to-split-pdf-extract-pages-windows-11/ Published: 2026-11-08 | Author: Ankit Kumar Tags: Windows 11, PDF, Documents, Files Summary: Save just the pages you need from a PDF on Windows 11 or 10. Use Microsoft Print to PDF with a page range, split every page out, or remove pages you don't need. Recommended app: Quick File Converter, https://www.mytechnician.tech/apps/file-converter/ (Microsoft Store: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9MTH938Z7S55?hl=en-us&cid=mytechnician-web). Optional; every step below uses built-in Windows tools. ## The Problem You need to send three pages of a 40-page statement, or upload one signed page of a contract. Sending the whole file shares more than you meant to and often breaks an upload size limit. Windows 11 can save a page range as a new PDF with its built-in PDF printer. For anything more (splitting every page out, or keeping links and forms) you need a PDF tool. ## Quick Checks First 1. **Note the page numbers** you need as the viewer shows them. Edge counts from the first page of the file, which may differ from the numbers printed on the pages. 2. **Password protected?** If the PDF blocks printing, the print method below will fail. You need the permissions password to lift that restriction. 3. **Keep the original.** Every method here creates a new file, but name it clearly so you do not send the wrong one. ## Step 1: Save a Page Range with Microsoft Print to PDF 1. Open the PDF in **Microsoft Edge** (double-click it, or right-click → **Open with** → **Microsoft Edge**). 2. Press **Ctrl + P**. 3. Set **Printer** to **Microsoft Print to PDF** (or **Save as PDF**, which Edge also offers). 4. Under **Pages**, choose the custom option and type the range: `3-5` for pages 3 to 5, or `1,4,7-9` for separate pages. 5. Select **Print** (or **Save**), choose a folder, and name the new file. ## Step 2: Know What Printing Changes Printing makes a new PDF from what is drawn on the page. That is fine for reading and sending, but some things do not survive: * **Links and bookmarks** stop working. * **Form fields** become flat text, so nobody can fill them in afterwards. * **Text usually stays selectable**, but complex documents can come out larger than the original. If any of that matters, extract the pages with a PDF tool instead (Step 3), which copies the pages as they are. ## Step 3: Split Every Page or Several Ranges Printing handles one range per file. For a scan of 30 receipts that should become 30 files, or a bundle that splits into three documents, use a PDF tool with a split function: 1. **Split every page** into its own file, numbered in order. 2. **Split by ranges** such as `1-3, 4-10, 11-15` to get one file per range. 3. **Remove pages** when it is easier to delete the two pages you do not want than to pick the 38 you do. > **Splitting PDFs often?** [Quick File Converter](https://www.mytechnician.tech/apps/file-converter/) splits a PDF into single pages or into the ranges you type, on the PC. It can also remove pages, and its page organizer lets you drag thumbnails to reorder or rotate before saving. Pages are copied rather than printed, so text and image quality stay as they were. ## Step 4: Check the New File 1. Open it and scroll through. Confirm the first and last pages are the ones you wanted. 2. Check the file size in File Explorer before uploading. If it is still too big, see [compress a PDF](https://www.mytechnician.tech/tips/how-to-compress-pdf-reduce-file-size-windows-11/). 3. If a page shows something you should not share (an account number, an address), black boxes are not enough. Open the PDF in Edge, press Ctrl + P, choose Microsoft Print to PDF, type the single page number under Pages, and print. The new PDF holds only that page. ### Can I split a PDF without Adobe Acrobat? Yes. Microsoft Print to PDF covers single ranges for free, and offline PDF tools handle splitting into many files. ### Why is my extracted PDF bigger than the original? Printing redraws the pages, and for some documents that stores more data than the original did. Extracting with a PDF tool copies the pages instead, which keeps the size in proportion. ### Does splitting a PDF reduce quality? Copying pages with a PDF tool does not. Printing to PDF usually looks the same on screen, but it flattens forms and removes links.
