How to Fix Default Apps Not Opening on Windows 11

The Problem

Double-clicking a PDF does nothing, web links open in Edge when you want Chrome, or mailto: links fail. Windows 11 routes files through Default apps and protocol handlers—when those registrations break, every click feels random.

One app crashes on launch? Fix app crashing or won't open. Settings won't open to change defaults? Fix Settings app.

Symptoms

  • How do you want to open this file? every time.
  • Wrong browser opens for http links.
  • App execution alias steals launches (e.g. two Chromes).

The Fix: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Set Defaults in Settings (Clean Path)

Settings → Apps → Default apps:

  1. Pick the app (e.g. Google Chrome, Adobe Acrobat, Outlook).
  2. Click Set default for all types it should own, or set individually:
    • .pdf → your PDF reader
    • HTTP / HTTPS → your browser
    • MAILTO → your mail app

Step 2: Reset Then Reassign

If assignments are stuck:

  1. Default apps → (app that misbehaves) → Reset (if shown).
  2. Or pick Microsoft Edge / Microsoft Edge PDF temporarily → then switch back to your preferred app.

Step 3: Turn Off Conflicting App Execution Aliases

Settings → Apps → Advanced app settings → App execution aliases:

  • Turn Off aliases you do not use (e.g. python.exe, duplicate chrome.exe installers). Aliases hijack Win + R and file opens.

Step 4: Repair the Target App

Settings → Apps → Installed apps → your PDF reader / browser → Advanced options → Repair → Reset if needed. Browsers: also clear cache.

Step 5: Fix PDF Preview in Explorer (Separate Issue)

Icons not showing? Fix File Explorer thumbnails. Opening still fails → Step 4 + reinstall reader from vendor site.

Step 6: Remove Stale Registry Hack Tools

Uninstall "PDF managers" and "default program fixers" that modify associations. Reapply defaults from Settings only.

Step 7: Classic Default Programs (Optional)

Win + R → ms-settings:defaultapps or Control Panel → Default Programs → Set your default programs (still works on some builds for legacy apps).

Step 8: New User Profile Test

If only one account has broken handlers, profile corruption is likely—test a second Windows user. Migrate files if a fresh profile fixes clicks.
