How to Fix Outlook Not Opening or Sync Issues on Windows 11
The Problem
Outlook spins on Loading profile, closes instantly, or mail sits outbox forever. Windows 11 ships New Outlook (web-based) and many PCs still have classic Outlook (Win32)—fixes differ slightly, but both need a healthy account sign-in and intact cache.
Windows Mail app instead? Same account fixes apply—repair via Settings → Apps. Default email links broken? Fix default apps.
Symptoms
- Outlook not in Start menu after an update.
- Password prompt loop.
- Only one mailbox won't sync; web Outlook works fine.
The Fix: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Which Outlook Are You Using?
- New Outlook toggle in classic Outlook (top right) or separate Store app—try switching off New Outlook to test classic.
- Mail app: Settings → Apps → Mail and Calendar → Advanced options → Repair.
Step 2: End Stuck Outlook Processes
Task Manager → end Outlook, Microsoft Edge (New Outlook uses Edge WebView2), olk / OfficeClickToRun if hung → relaunch.
Step 3: Repair Office / Outlook
Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Microsoft Office or Outlook → Modify (if available) → Quick Repair → then Online Repair.
No Modify button? Control Panel → Programs → Microsoft 365 → Change → Repair.
Step 4: Reset New Outlook / Mail Cache
For New Outlook: Settings → Apps → Outlook (new) → Advanced options → Reset.
Classic: close Outlook → rename data folder (backup first):
%localappdata%\Microsoft\Outlook → rename Outlook.pst only if you know you use POP—most Microsoft 365 accounts resync from cloud.
Step 5: Remove and Re-add Account
File → Office Account / Account Settings → remove the profile → add again with modern auth (MFA). For work accounts, use Work or school sign-in, not legacy IMAP unless IT requires it.
Step 6: Fix WebView2 and Edge (New Outlook)
Install Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime from Microsoft if missing. Repair Edge—New Outlook is blank without WebView2.
Step 7: Disable Add-ins (Classic)
Win + R → outlook.exe /safe → if it opens, File → Options → Add-ins → disable COM add-ins one by one.
Step 8: Sync and Server Checks
- Web login at outlook.office.com—if web fails, fix account password/MFA, not Windows.
- Fix wrong date and time—TLS breaks with a bad clock.
- VPN/proxy off for test; corporate SSL inspection needs IT certs.
OneDrive and Attachments
Large attachments stall sync—check OneDrive sync issues if saves hang on Attachments.
