How to Fix Fullscreen Games Crashing or Minimizing on Windows 11

The Problem

You alt-tab once and the game minimizes forever, or exclusive fullscreen flashes black and returns to the desktop. Windows 11's compositor, fullscreen optimizations, notifications, and second monitors all compete for focus—especially on dual-screen setups and streaming rigs.

Stutter but stays fullscreen? Fix game stuttering and low FPS. Second monitor blank? Fix second monitor not detected.

Symptoms

  • Game minimizes when a notification appears or you click the other monitor.
  • Black screen for 2–3 seconds when entering fullscreen.
  • Only borderless works; exclusive fullscreen crashes.

The Fix: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Toggle Fullscreen Optimizations (Per Game)

  1. Right-click the game .exePropertiesCompatibility.
  2. Check Disable fullscreen optimizationsApply → test.
  3. Worse? Uncheck and retest—some engines need optimizations on, others off. Note the setting that wins for this title.

Step 2: Match In-Game Display Mode

Try in this order, rebooting only if the game hangs:

  1. Exclusive fullscreen (lowest latency).
  2. Borderless windowed (best alt-tab stability on Windows 11).
  3. Windowed at native resolution (diagnostic only).

Document which mode stops the minimize loop—stick with it for daily play.

Step 3: Focus Assist and Notifications

SettingsSystemNotifications → enable Do not disturb (or Focus assistAlarms only) while gaming. Turn off Show notifications on lock screen and Tips that steal focus on first launch.

Step 4: Game Bar and Capture Hooks

SettingsGamingGame bar → turn Off if you do not use it. Disable Record in the background. If you stream, use one capture tool—OBS or Game Bar, not both overlaying the same exclusive fullscreen.

Step 5: Multi-Monitor and HDR

  • SettingsSystemDisplay → set the game monitor as Main display.
  • Turn off HDR temporarily on that panel if colors flash and the game exits fullscreen—see HDR washed out colors.
  • Win + PPC screen only for testing (disables extend temporarily).

Step 6: GPU Driver and Scaling

  • Update GPU driver; if crashes started after update, roll back or clean install.
  • NVIDIA Control Panel / AMD Software → set scaling to GPU and full screen for the game's resolution test.

Step 7: Snap Layouts and Overlays

SettingsSystemMultitasking → turn off Snap windows suggestions if hover on the top edge minimizes some borderless titles. Exit RGB utilities, FPS overlays, and GeForce Experience in-game overlay one by one.

Step 8: Run as Standard User, Repair Game Files

Avoid permanent Run as administrator—anti-cheat may break. Verify game files in Steam/Epic. For DirectX popups on launch, see fix DirectX errors in games.

Dual-PC or KVM Users

USB KVM switches and wireless keyboards with macro software can send accidental Win or Alt+Tab keys—test with a basic wired keyboard plugged directly into the PC.

Input lag after fullscreen is stable: Reduce input lag for gaming.
