How to Fix Touchscreen Not Working in Windows 11

The Problem

Tapping the screen does nothing, touches register inches away from your finger, or touch worked until a driver update. The touchpad and mouse still work—that points to the HID touch stack, disabled touch in settings, or a cracked digitizer—not a frozen PC.

Touchpad only broken? Fix touchpad not working on a laptop. Display black but touch sounds? Fix black screen on boot.

Symptoms

  • No response to finger taps; stylus may still work or vice versa.
  • Touch works in Tablet mode only, not in desktop apps.
  • Ghost touches or lines on the panel (often hardware).

The Fix: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Basic Toggles

  1. Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Pen & Windows Ink (or search Touch) → ensure touch features are not disabled by OEM utility.
  2. Disconnect USB touch overlays and test bare screen—kiosk drivers can hijack HID.
  3. Reboot—resume from sleep often drops touch until a full restart.

Step 2: Device Manager — Touch and HID

Device Manager → Human Interface Devices:

  1. Look for HID-compliant touch screen, I2C HID Device, or vendor names (Wacom, Goodix, ELAN).
  2. Right-click → Enable device if grayed out.
  3. Update driver → Search automatically; if worse after update, Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver.
  4. Still dead? Uninstall device on the touch entry → reboot → let Windows reinstall; then install the laptop/tablet driver pack from the manufacturer site.

Step 3: Disable and Re-Enable in BIOS

Reboot → F2 / Del → find Touchscreen, Internal Touch, or Tablet → Enabled. Some fleet laptops ship with touch disabled in firmware.

Step 4: Calibrate and Reset Mapping

Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Pen & Windows Ink → Calibrate (or search Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input in Control Panel legacy tools). Follow the crosshair targets if touches are offset only on one edge.

Step 5: Pen vs Touch Priority

If a stylus is docked or low battery, some drivers disable palm rejection badly. Remove the pen, charge it, or update Surface / Lenovo Pen apps. Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Touchpad → confirm touchpad palm rejection is not blocking edge swipes on convertibles.

Step 6: Windows Updates and Firmware

Install pending Windows Update plus optional firmware from Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft Surface. Surface devices: run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit if touch failed after a system update.

Step 7: Test in Safe Mode and Another User

Settings → System → Recovery → Restart now (Advanced startup) → Safe Mode with networking. Touch works in Safe Mode but not your account? A login script or accessibility tool is interfering—check Settings → Accessibility → Interaction (Filter keys off).

Hardware Red Flags

  • Cracks, purple blobs, or touch only in one corner → panel/digitizer damage; software will not fix.
  • Swollen battery pushing the screen—replace battery before calibrating again.
