How to Fix Windows 11 Touchpad Not Working on a Laptop

The Problem

The built-in touchpad does not move the cursor, clicks do nothing, or two-finger scroll stopped after an update. USB mouse still works—that narrows it to touchpad disable, driver, or BIOS—not "Windows is dead."

Keyboard dead too? See keyboard not typing—internal ribbon or chipset power issues can hit both.

Quick Fixes

Function Key Disable (Most Common)

Many laptops disable the pad with Fn + F5, Fn + F7, or a touchpad icon on the F-row. Tap it once with Fn held. Some brands use double-tap the top-left corner of the pad to toggle—try that if you see a small LED on the pad.

External Mouse Plugged In

SettingsBluetooth & devicesMouseTouchpad → set Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected to Always.

The Fix: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Restart and Windows Update

Reboot. Install optional Synaptics, ELAN, or Precision Touchpad drivers from Windows Update or the laptop maker's support site—never only a random "driver updater" app.

Step 2: Reinstall Touchpad Driver

Device ManagerMice and other pointing devices (or Human Interface Devices):

  1. Right-click HID-compliant touch pad / Precision Touchpad / ELANUninstall device → check Attempt to remove driver if shown.
  2. Reboot. Windows pulls a driver; if basic, install the vendor package.

Step 3: Enable in BIOS

Reboot → F2 / DelAdvanced or MainInternal Pointing Device / TouchpadEnabled. Corporate laptops sometimes ship with it disabled.

Step 4: Precision Touchpad Settings

SettingsBluetooth & devicesTouchpad:

  • Taps and Scroll & zoom → all On for testing.
  • Reset touchpad settings if the page offers it (some OEM apps have reset).

Step 5: OEM Control Software

Dell QuickSet, Lenovo Vantage, ASUS MyASUS — disable "palm check" extremes or "disable touchpad when typing" temporarily. Old versions break after Windows 11 upgrades—update or uninstall the touchpad module and use Windows settings only.

Step 6: Power Management

Device Manager → touchpad device → PropertiesPower Management → uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Do the same for I2C HID Device entries linked to the trackpad on thin laptops.

Step 7: Cursor Frozen Only After Sleep

Update BIOS + chipset drivers from the vendor. Disable fast startup (Control PanelPower OptionsChoose what power buttons do). If the whole shell is stuck, restart Explorer or reboot.

Gestures Stopped, Pointer Still Moves

  • Not a Precision pad: install vendor driver for three-finger gestures.
  • SettingsBluetooth & devicesTouchpadThree-finger gestures / Four-finger — set to what you expect.
  • Tablet mode on 2-in-1s can change gesture behavior—switch to laptop mode.

Physical Damage

Pad clicks but no movement → cable or pad failure after drop. Intermittent jumpy cursor → swollen battery pressing pad from below—stop using on power, service the battery.
