Peripherals & Devices guides

Get the things you plug in working again: mice, keyboards, printers, scanners, and the drivers behind them.

Where to begin

Try the device in another USB port, and on another computer if you have one. That single test tells you whether to troubleshoot the device or Windows.

If it fails on every PC, the device or its cable is the likely cause. If it works elsewhere, open Device Manager, look for a warning icon or an unknown device, then update or reinstall the driver.

Printers and scanners add their own layer: the print queue, the spooler service, and the network connection. For wireless devices, check the batteries and the pairing as well.
