Performance & Optimization guides

Reclaim speed on a PC that has slowed down: high CPU and RAM use, disk thrashing, startup bloat, and storage that has filled up.

Where to begin

A slow PC usually has one busy resource. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, select Processes, and sort by CPU, Memory, and Disk in turn. The column sitting near 100% tells you which guide to open first.

If nothing stands out, look at what runs at startup and how full the system drive is. Windows needs free space for updates, the page file, and temporary files, so a nearly full C: drive slows everything down.

Laptops need one more check. A battery-saving power plan, or a hot CPU that throttles itself, can make a healthy machine feel old.
