How to Fix a Laptop Plugged In but Not Charging

The Problem

The battery icon says Plugged in, not charging — or the percentage sits still, or the laptop only runs while the charger is attached and dies the moment you unplug it.

Three things can be true: the power reaching the laptop is wrong, the battery has stopped accepting charge, or Windows and firmware are deliberately holding the charge back. The last one is common and completely harmless.

Symptoms

  • Tray icon reads Plugged in, not charging or Plugged in, charging slowly.
  • Charge sticks at 60%, 80%, or another round number and never moves.
  • Charging works only at a certain cable angle, or only from one USB-C port.

Step 1: Rule Out the Obvious Power Problems

  1. Try a different wall socket, and skip the power strip — plug directly into the wall.
  2. Check the charger brick's LED. No light means the brick or its detachable mains lead is dead.
  3. Inspect the cable for kinks, and the barrel or USB-C connector for bent pins and lint. Blow lint out of the port gently.
  4. On USB-C laptops, try every USB-C port — many models charge on only one or two.
  5. Confirm the wattage on the brick matches the sticker on the original. A 45 W charger on a 100 W laptop shows charging slowly or refuses to charge under load.

Step 2: Do a Hard Power Reset

This clears the embedded controller that manages charging.

  1. Shut down Windows completely.
  2. Unplug the charger and remove the battery if your model has a removable one.
  3. Hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the battery and charger, then power on.
  5. On many Dell, HP, and Lenovo models this alone restores charging.

Step 3: Reinstall the Battery Driver

  1. Right-click Start → Device Manager.
  2. Expand Batteries.
  3. Right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method BatteryUninstall device. Leave Microsoft AC Adapter alone.
  4. Restart. Windows reinstalls it automatically and re-reads the battery state.

Step 4: Check for a Charge Limit

Most business laptops ship with a battery-longevity cap. This is the single most common reason a battery stops at 60% or 80%.

  1. Open your manufacturer's utility: Lenovo Vantage, Dell Power Manager, MyASUS, HP Support Assistant, or MSI Center.
  2. Look for Battery charge threshold, Conservation mode, Battery Health Charging, or Primarily AC Use.
  3. Switch it to Full capacity if you actually need 100%.
  4. Some models set this in BIOS/UEFI instead — look under Power or Advanced.

Step 5: Read the Real Battery Health

  1. Open Terminal (Admin) and run:
    powercfg /batteryreport /output C:\battery-report.html
    
  2. Open C:\battery-report.html in your browser.
  3. Compare Design Capacity with Full Charge Capacity. Below roughly 60% of design means the battery is worn out and should be replaced.
  4. The Battery capacity history table shows how fast it degraded.

Step 6: Update BIOS and Chipset Firmware

Charging logic lives in firmware, and battery bugs are fixed there.

  1. Find your exact model on the manufacturer's support site.
  2. Install the current BIOS/UEFI and chipset packages.
  3. Keep the laptop plugged in throughout, and do not interrupt the update.

Step 7: Reset Windows Power Settings

  1. In Terminal (Admin):
    powercfg -restoredefaultschemes
    
  2. SettingsSystemPower & battery → turn off Energy saver if it is forced on.
  3. Restart and watch the battery icon for ten minutes.

Step 8: Test with Another Charger

  1. Borrow a known-good charger of the same wattage and connector.
  2. If it charges, the original brick or cable is the fault — replace it with a manufacturer or reputable third-party unit.
  3. If it still refuses, and the battery report shows a healthy battery, the charging circuit on the motherboard is the likely fault. That is a workshop repair.

What Not to Do

  • Don't use a cheap unbranded USB-C charger. Underpowered or non-compliant units are why many laptops show charging slowly and can damage the port.
  • Don't run "battery calibration" apps. Modern batteries do not need them; the manufacturer utility is the only tool worth using.
  • Don't ignore swelling. A trackpad that bulges or a case that no longer closes flat means a swollen cell — stop using it and replace the battery.

Still Not Working?

If a known-good charger, a healthy battery report, and current firmware still leave you at not charging, the DC jack or charging IC has failed and needs service. In the meantime, back up while the laptop still runs: set up automatic backups.
