The Short Answer
- 8 GB — the floor for Windows 11. Fine for browsing, email, and streaming, with nothing else open. Tight in 2026.
- 16 GB — the sensible default for almost everyone. Handles heavy browsing, Office, and mainstream gaming comfortably.
- 32 GB — worth it for video editing, large photo work, virtual machines, big datasets, or streaming while you game.
- 64 GB and up — professional 4K video, 3D rendering, and running several VMs at once. Nobody else needs it.
More RAM does not make a PC faster once you have enough. It stops the PC becoming slower when you run more at once. If you are already comfortable at your current amount, spending on RAM buys you nothing — put it into an SSD instead.

How to Tell If You Need More
Measure rather than guess.
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Esc→ Performance → Memory. - Use your PC normally for an hour, with everything you typically open.
- Read In use at your busiest, and check the Committed figure — for example
18/24 GB. - Interpret it:
- Peaks below 60% — you have plenty. Do not buy RAM.
- Peaks at 70-85% — comfortable, with room to grow.
- Sustained above 90%, or Committed exceeding your physical RAM — you are paging to disk, and more RAM will help noticeably.
- Also watch Disk in the same tab. Heavy disk activity while memory is full is the classic sign of thrashing.
What Actually Uses Your RAM
- Windows 11 itself — roughly 3-4 GB at idle on a clean install.
- Browsers — 150-400 MB per active tab; a busy session easily passes 6 GB.
- Modern games — 8-16 GB, on top of the OS. This is why 8 GB total is now uncomfortable for gaming.
- Video editing — 16 GB for 1080p, 32 GB for 4K, more for heavy effects work.
- Photo editing — 16 GB is enough for most; large multi-layer files want 32 GB.
- Virtual machines and Docker — whatever you give the VM, plus the host's own needs.
- Background bloat — startup apps and vendor utilities you never asked for. Free some back first: disable startup programs and debloat Windows 11.
Choose by What You Do
- Basic use — browsing, email, video, light Office. 8 GB works, 16 GB is better and barely costs more.
- Everyday multitasking — many tabs, Office, video calls, some photo editing. 16 GB.
- Gaming — 16 GB is the current standard. Go 32 GB only if you stream, run mods heavily, or keep a browser and Discord open alongside.

- Development — 32 GB if you run containers, emulators, or several IDEs.
Speed and Channels Matter Too
Capacity is not the whole story.
- Run in dual channel. Two 8 GB sticks are meaningfully faster than one 16 GB stick, especially on laptops and any PC using integrated graphics. Matching pairs, matching slots.
- Match the standard. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable — the motherboard dictates which you use.
- Speed helps modestly. DDR4-3200 and DDR5-6000 are good value sweet spots; paying for extreme speeds returns very little in real use.
- Enable the profile. RAM runs at a slow default until you turn on XMP (Intel) or EXPO (AMD) in BIOS. If the PC becomes unstable afterwards, that profile is the first thing to disable — see IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.
- Mixing kits works badly. Different kits often run at the slower speed or refuse to boot. Buy a matched kit.
Before You Buy: Check What You Have
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Esc→ Performance → Memory and read the total, Speed, Slots used, and Form factor. - DIMM is a desktop stick; SODIMM is a laptop stick — they are not interchangeable.
- If it reads Slots used: 2 of 2, adding RAM means replacing what is there, not adding to it.
- Check the maximum your motherboard supports on the manufacturer's site, and its list of tested kits.
- Many thin laptops have RAM soldered to the board and cannot be upgraded at all. Check your model before buying anything.

When RAM Is Not the Answer
More memory will not fix:
- A mechanical hard drive. Moving to an SSD is a far bigger improvement for the money: how to choose an SSD.
- A CPU at 100%. That is a different bottleneck: fix 100% CPU usage.
- Malware or bloatware eating resources: remove viruses and malware.
- Thermal throttling. A hot laptop is slow regardless of memory: fix CPU overheating.
- Low FPS caused by the GPU. RAM is not video memory: fix low FPS and stuttering.
What Not to Do
- Don't buy RAM because a "PC optimizer" told you to. Check Task Manager instead.
- Don't rely on a paging-file tweak to substitute for memory. Disk is orders of magnitude slower than RAM.
- Don't buy a single large stick if you can afford a matched pair — you lose dual-channel bandwidth.
- Don't mix DDR4 and DDR5, or expect a laptop stick to fit a desktop board.
Where to Spend Instead
If your peak usage sits below 60%, the money is better spent on an SSD, a graphics card, or better cooling.
