Buying & Upgrades guides

Spend well: which upgrade actually helps, how much RAM you need, choosing an SSD, and when a repair beats a replacement.

Where to begin

Find the bottleneck before you spend money. Task Manager shows whether memory, disk, or CPU is running out during the work you do every day.

On most older PCs, moving from a hard drive to an SSD makes the biggest visible difference. Adding RAM helps when memory stays close to full.

Check compatibility before you order: the RAM type, the SSD interface, physical fit, and the wattage and connectors of the power supply. The motherboard or laptop manual lists these. If a repair costs close to the price of a replacement, compare the two before you commit.
