How to Fix Game Controller Not Working in Windows 11

The Problem

Steam shows no controller, the Xbox button blinks forever, or the pad works on the desktop but not in-game. Windows 11 supports Xbox and many PlayStation controllers natively, but bad USB power saving, missing drivers, or launcher overlays (Steam vs Epic) often block detection.

Only Steam won't open? Fix the launcher first: Steam not opening. USB ports dead entirely? See USB ports not working.

Symptoms

  • Controller vibrates or lights up but games ignore all input.
  • Device Manager shows a yellow warning on Xbox Peripherals or HID-compliant game controller.
  • Controller worked until a Windows or Steam update.

The Fix: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Test on a Different Port or Connection

  1. Wired: Try a rear motherboard USB port (not a front-panel hub). Avoid USB 3.0 hubs for older Xbox 360 wireless receivers.
  2. Bluetooth: SettingsBluetooth & devices → remove the controller → pair again with the controller in pairing mode (Xbox: hold the pair button; PS: Share + PS).
  3. Xbox Wireless Adapter: Plug directly into the PC, not through a hub.

Step 2: Confirm Windows Sees the Controller

  1. Press Win + R, type joy.cpl, Enter — the Game Controllers window opens.
  2. Select your controller → Properties — press buttons and move sticks. If nothing registers here, Windows does not have the driver yet.

Step 3: Update or Reinstall the Controller Driver

  1. Right-click StartDevice Manager.
  2. Expand Xbox Peripherals, Human Interface Devices, or Bluetooth.
  3. Right-click the controller → Update driverSearch automatically.
  4. Still missing? Uninstall device → check Attempt to remove the driver → reboot and reconnect.

Step 4: Disable USB Selective Suspend

Power saving can drop wired controllers mid-session.

  1. Control PanelHardware and SoundPower OptionsChange plan settingsChange advanced power settings.
  2. Expand USB settingsUSB selective suspend setting → set to Disabled for Plugged in and On battery.
  3. Also see USB ports not working for Device Manager power-management steps.

Step 5: Configure Steam Input (Steam Games)

  1. Open SteamSettingsControllerGeneral Controller Settings.
  2. Check Xbox Configuration Support and/or PlayStation Configuration Support.
  3. In the game's PropertiesController, set Use default settings or Enable Steam Input if the game has no native pad support.

Step 6: Install DS4Windows or DualSenseX (PlayStation Controllers)

Sony's DualShock 4 and DualSense need extra software for some non-Steam games.

  1. Download DS4Windows or DualSenseX from the official GitHub release page only.
  2. Run once, connect the controller, and leave the app running in the tray while gaming.

Step 7: Test Outside the Game

Open Microsoft Store → search Xbox Accessories or use a browser game that supports controllers. If input works everywhere except one title, the game's own settings or anti-cheat is blocking pads—check in-game Controls and vendor forums.

Still Not Working?

  • Controller works in Steam but not Epic or Xbox app? Each launcher has its own input layer—enable controller support in that launcher's settings.
  • Input lag or stuttering? Tune Windows for gaming: reduce input lag and optimize Windows 11 for gaming.
