Setup & Maintenance guides

Install, migrate, and keep a PC healthy: clean installs, update problems, drivers, backups, and routine upkeep.

Where to begin

Before a clean install or a major update, back up your files. If the drive is encrypted, make sure you can find your BitLocker recovery key as well.

When Windows Update fails, check free space, restart, and run the troubleshooter before trying anything more drastic. SFC and DISM repair damaged system files and are low-risk steps to try on a working PC.

Routine upkeep is short: keep Windows and drivers current, leave free space on the system drive, and confirm your backups still run. A few minutes each month is usually enough.
