When to Clean Install

A clean install wipes the drive and lays down a fresh copy of Windows 11—no leftover bloat, malware, or years of clutter. It's the gold standard for a slow PC that resets can't save, or for a brand-new drive. If you'd rather keep your files and apps, use a factory reset instead.

Before You Start

  • Back up everything—a clean install erases the target drive. See back up your PC.
  • Have a USB drive (8 GB+) you can erase completely.
  • Confirm your PC meets Windows 11 requirements (TPM 2.0 + Secure Boot): enable TPM and Secure Boot.

The Install: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Create the Bootable USB

  1. On a working PC, open Microsoft's Download Windows 11 page.
  2. Download the Media Creation Tool and run it.
  3. Choose Create installation mediaUSB flash drive → select your USB. The tool downloads Windows and makes the USB bootable (this erases the USB).

Step 2: Boot from the USB

  1. Plug the USB into the target PC and power it on.
  2. Tap the boot-menu key (F12, F10, Esc, or Del—shown briefly at startup).
  3. Select the USB drive (often listed as "UEFI: ").

Step 3: Start Setup

  1. Choose language and keyboard → NextInstall now.
  2. At the product key screen, click I don't have a product key if Windows is digitally linked to your account or hardware—it reactivates automatically after install.
  3. Select your edition (match what came with the PC) and accept the license terms.

Step 4: Wipe and Choose the Drive

  1. Choose Custom: Install Windows only (advanced).
  2. Select each partition on the target disk and click Delete until it shows one block of Unallocated Space. (Only touch the drive you intend to wipe.)
  3. Select the unallocated space → Next. Setup creates the needed partitions and installs Windows.

Step 5: First-Boot Setup (OOBE)

  1. Pick region and keyboard, then connect to Wi-Fi.
  2. Sign in with your Microsoft account (or create a local account) and set your privacy options.
  3. Windows finishes setup and lands on the desktop.

Step 6: Update and Install Drivers

  1. Run Windows Update repeatedly until no updates remain.
  2. Install chipset, GPU, and network drivers from your PC or motherboard maker. Help: update outdated drivers.

After the Clean Install

  • Reinstall your apps and restore files from your backup.
  • Confirm activation: SettingsSystemActivation. If it's not active, see activate Windows 11.
