Fix Desktop Icons Missing or Disappeared in Windows 11
The Problem
You start the PC and the desktop is empty, or some icons are gone while others remain. Shortcuts, files, and folders you kept on the desktop seem to have vanished.
They are almost never deleted. The three common causes are a hidden-icons setting that was switched off, OneDrive moving your desktop into its own folder, and a damaged icon cache that shows blank or white icons. Each takes a minute to check.
Symptoms
- The whole desktop is empty except for the wallpaper.
- This PC, Recycle Bin, or Network icons are missing, but your files are there.
- Files disappeared after signing into OneDrive or setting up a new PC.
- Icons show as blank white squares or the wrong picture.
- Icons disappeared after unplugging a second monitor.
Quick Checks
- Right-click an empty part of the desktop → View → make sure Show desktop icons is ticked.
- Press
Win + Dtwice. If an app was covering the desktop, the icons reappear. - Restart the PC once. A stuck Explorer often loads the desktop correctly the second time.
The Fix: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Turn On Show Desktop Icons
Right-click the desktop → View → Show desktop icons. It is easy to switch off by accident with a stray right-click, and nothing else hides every icon at once.
While you are in the View menu, try Auto arrange icons and Align icons to grid. Icons moved off-screen by a resolution change come back into view.
Step 2: Check Whether OneDrive Moved Your Desktop
If OneDrive folder backup is on, Windows moves your desktop to C:\Users\YourName\OneDrive\Desktop. When the setting changes, or you sign into a different account, the desktop can point at an empty folder.
- Open File Explorer and go to
C:\Users\YourName\OneDrive\Desktop, thenC:\Users\YourName\Desktop. One of them usually has your files. - To see where Windows is currently loading the desktop from, right-click Desktop in File Explorer's left pane → Properties → Location tab.
- To bring it back to the normal location, click Restore Default, then move your files into it.
To manage the backup, click the OneDrive cloud icon → Settings (gear icon) → Sync and back up → Manage back up, and turn Desktop on or off. If OneDrive is out of sync, see fix OneDrive sync issues.
Step 3: Restore This PC, Recycle Bin, and Other System Icons
These are controlled separately from your own files.
- Settings → Personalization → Themes.
- Scroll down and click Desktop icon settings.
- Tick Computer (shows as This PC), Recycle Bin, User's Files, Network, and Control Panel as needed.
- Click OK.
Step 4: Restart Windows Explorer
The desktop is drawn by Explorer. If it hangs, the desktop can stay blank.
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Escto open Task Manager. - Find Windows Explorer → right-click → Restart.
Step 5: Rebuild the Icon Cache
Blank, white, or wrong icons usually mean the icon cache is damaged.
- Save your work and close open apps.
- Open Terminal (no admin needed) and run these three commands, one at a time:
Stop-Process -Name explorer -Force Remove-Item "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\iconcache_*.db" -Force -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue Start-Process explorer - If any icons are still wrong, restart the PC.
The taskbar disappears while Explorer is stopped. This is expected and only lasts a few seconds.
Step 6: Check You Are Not on a Temporary Profile
If your wallpaper has changed, your apps are missing, and the desktop is empty, Windows may have loaded a temporary profile. You will usually see a notification saying "You've been signed in with a temporary profile". Your files are safe in your real profile: follow fix temporary profile in Windows 11.
Step 7: Search for the Missing Files
If a particular file is still missing:
- Open File Explorer, select This PC, and search for the file name.
- Check the Recycle Bin.
- Right-click the Desktop folder → Properties → Previous Versions if File History or restore points are on.
If the file really was deleted, see recover deleted files.
What Not to Do
- Don't reset Windows to get your icons back. This is a display or sync issue, and a reset will not bring back files from a different folder.
- Don't turn off OneDrive backup without checking where your files are. Turning it off can leave your files in the OneDrive folder and an empty desktop in its place.
- Don't run "icon fixer" programs. The steps above do the same thing without installing anything.
FAQ
Why did my desktop icons disappear suddenly?
Most often, Show desktop icons was turned off from the right-click menu, OneDrive moved your desktop folder, or Explorer failed to load. All three are fixed in Steps 1, 2, and 4.
Where did my desktop files go after signing into OneDrive?
Into C:\Users\YourName\OneDrive\Desktop. They also sync to OneDrive online, so you can find them at onedrive.com under Desktop.
How do I get the Recycle Bin back on my desktop?
Settings → Personalization → Themes → Desktop icon settings, then tick Recycle Bin.
Still Missing?
If the taskbar and Start menu are also broken, see fix taskbar not working. If File Explorer keeps crashing, which takes the desktop with it, follow fix File Explorer crashing. To stop this from costing you files next time, set up automatic backups.
