How to Fix Microsoft Edge Not Opening or Crashing in Windows 11

The Problem

You click the Edge icon and nothing happens, or a window flashes and vanishes. Sometimes Edge opens but crashes within seconds, or every tab shows "This page is having a problem" with error codes like STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION or RESULT_CODE_HUNG.

Edge is built into Windows 11, so you cannot uninstall it like a normal app — but you can repair it, and almost every case comes down to one of four things: a hung background process, a broken extension, a corrupt profile, or a GPU driver conflict.

Symptoms

  • Clicking Edge does nothing, but msedge.exe appears in Task Manager.
  • Edge opens to a blank white or black window, then closes.
  • Tabs crash with "Aw, snap"-style errors or STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION.
  • Edge worked yesterday and broke after a Windows or graphics driver update.

Quick Checks

  1. Restart the PC — not shut down and power on, but Restart, which fully clears Fast Startup state.
  2. Try opening an InPrivate window: right-click the Edge taskbar icon → New InPrivate window. If that works, the problem is in your profile or extensions.
  3. Check free space on C: — Edge will not start cleanly with less than a few hundred MB free. See free up disk space on C:.

The Fix: Step-by-Step

Step 1: End Every Edge Process

Edge keeps processes running in the background for Startup boost. If one of them hangs, new windows cannot open.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. On Processes, find Microsoft Edge (it may be under Background processes).
  3. Right-click → End task. Repeat until no Edge entries remain.
  4. Open Edge again.

To stop this recurring, open edge://settings/system and turn off Startup boost and Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed.

Step 2: Start Edge Without Extensions

A single bad extension can crash Edge on launch, before you can reach the settings to remove it.

  1. Press Win + R, type the following, and press Enter: 
    msedge --disable-extensions
  2. If Edge opens, go to edge://extensions and turn every extension off.
  3. Restart Edge normally, then turn extensions back on one at a time until the crash returns. Remove the one that causes it.

Step 3: Turn Off Hardware Acceleration

Crashes right after a graphics driver update, or a black window with a working title bar, point at the GPU.

  1. Start Edge with the GPU disabled: Win + R → 
    msedge --disable-gpu
  2. Go to edge://settings/system → turn off Use graphics acceleration when available → Restart.
  3. Then update or clean-install your graphics driver: clean install GPU drivers with DDU. Once the driver is fixed, turn acceleration back on — video playback is much smoother with it.

Step 4: Repair Edge

Windows can re-download and reinstall Edge without touching your bookmarks, passwords, or history.

  1. Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Find Microsoft Edge → ⋯ → Modify.
  3. Approve the prompt, then click Repair. It needs an internet connection and takes a few minutes.
  4. Restart the PC when it finishes.

Step 5: Create a New Profile

If InPrivate works but your normal window crashes, the profile is damaged.

  1. Open an InPrivate window, or run msedge --disable-extensions.
  2. Click the profile icon at the top left → Other profiles → Add profile → Add.
  3. Sign in with your Microsoft account in the new profile to sync favorites and passwords back.
  4. Once everything is confirmed synced, remove the old profile at edge://settings/profiles.

Step 6: Reset Edge Settings

This clears startup pages, pinned tabs, site permissions, cookies, and turns off extensions — but keeps favorites, history, and saved passwords.

Go to edge://settings/reset → Restore settings to their default values → Reset.

Step 7: Repair Windows System Files

If Edge is one of several built-in apps misbehaving (Settings, Start, Search), the problem is Windows itself. Run SFC and DISM: how to run SFC and DISM.

What Not to Do

  • Don't delete the Edge folders in Program Files to "reinstall" it. Windows Update and other apps depend on the Edge WebView runtime, and a half-removed Edge breaks things like Widgets, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Don't download Edge installers from third-party sites. The only source is microsoft.com/edge.
  • Don't run registry "Edge removal" scripts. They break updates and are hard to undo.

Still Not Working?

Open Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application and look for Application Error entries naming msedge.exe at the time of the crash. The Faulting module line tells you what failed — a graphics DLL (nvwgf2umx.dll, atidxx64.dll, igd10iumd64.dll) means the driver, while a third-party DLL usually means software injecting itself into the browser.
